The Hydrophobic Sensor consists of long-chain alkanethiol molecules that are directly attached to the gold surface and form a flat hydrophobic layer. There is no dextran or other matrix on the gold surface. It is designed to work with lipids and membrane-associated molecules and to facilitate liposome mediated hydrophobic adsorption that supports the formation of a polar lipid monolayer with the hydrophilic head groups directed toward the solution. This sensor type provides a surface suitable to study membrane associated interactions.
